Locksmith advice & guides
Clear answers to the questions we're asked most.
Locked out of your house? What to do
Stay calm, check every door and window safely, contact anyone with a spare key, and if that fails call a vetted locksmith. Don't try to force the door.
Can a locksmith open my door without damaging it?
Usually, yes. Most nightlatches, mortice locks and uPVC doors can be opened with non-destructive techniques. High-security anti-snap cylinders sometimes need to be drilled.
How much does a locksmith cost?
The cost depends on the job, the lock and parts needed, and the time of day. Always agree the price before any work starts.
Should my lock be repaired or replaced?
Repair it if the fault is alignment, a broken key or a single worn part. Replace it if keys are missing, the lock is old or insecure, or it doesn't meet your insurer's standard.
What are anti-snap locks?
Anti-snap euro cylinders are designed to resist lock snapping, a quick burglary method used on uPVC and composite doors. Look for TS007 3-star or SS312 Diamond marks.
Are my locks insurance compliant?
Many home insurers require BS3621 locks on final exit doors and suitable locks on uPVC doors. Check your policy wording, then check the marks on your locks.
What is a BS3621 lock?
BS3621 is the British Standard for thief-resistant locks that need a key to open from both sides. It's the standard many UK insurers name for final exit doors.
Can uPVC door locks be repaired?
Yes. Most uPVC door lock faults are a worn gearbox, mechanism, cylinder or handle, or a door that's dropped. These parts can be replaced without changing the door.
Why won't my key turn in the lock?
Common causes are a worn or wrongly cut key, a dirty or worn cylinder, or a door out of alignment putting pressure on the bolt.
Why won't my uPVC door lock?
If the handle won't lift, it's usually misalignment or a failing gearbox. If the handle lifts but the key won't turn, it's often the cylinder or gearbox.
What to do after a burglary
Make sure you're safe, call the police, don't touch anything, contact your insurer, then get your doors and locks secured.
Should I change the locks when moving house?
Yes, it's sensible. You can't know how many keys the previous owners, tenants, builders or agents still have. Changing the cylinder is usually quick and is a good moment to fit anti-snap locks.
Can a locksmith repair a multipoint locking system?
Usually, yes. Many multipoint lock faults are caused by a worn gearbox, a dropped door or a misaligned keep. These can often be adjusted or the gearbox replaced without changing the whole strip.
