Quick answer
Stay calm, check every door and window safely, contact anyone with a spare key, and if that fails call a vetted locksmith. Don't try to force the door.
First, check you're safe
If a child, vulnerable person or pet is inside and at risk, or something is cooking, call 999. The emergency services can force entry if lives are at risk.
Check for other ways in, safely
Try the back door and any patio doors. Don't climb in through windows or damage anything. It's often more expensive to repair a broken window than to call a locksmith.
Spare keys
A neighbour, family member, landlord or letting agent may hold a spare. If you rent, your landlord may have to be told before any lock is changed anyway.
Calling a locksmith
Call a vetted locksmith and give your postcode, the door type (timber, uPVC or composite) and the lock if you know it. Ask for the price before work starts.
A good locksmith will try non-destructive entry first and may ask you to show ID or proof of address once inside. That's for your protection.
