Quick answer
Usually, yes. Most nightlatches, mortice locks and uPVC doors can be opened with non-destructive techniques. High-security anti-snap cylinders sometimes need to be drilled.
How non-destructive entry works
Locksmiths use picking, decoding, latch slipping, letterbox tools and bypass tools. The right method depends on the lock and how the door was left, for example just latched or deadlocked.
Doors that are easiest to open
A door that's only on the latch (pulled shut, not locked with the key) is usually the quickest and cleanest to open.
When drilling is needed
Some high-security locks are deliberately built to resist picking. If entry without damage isn't realistic, a good locksmith will explain why and agree the cost of a replacement before drilling.
